The 5th Waziri of Katsina State, Prof. Sani Abubakar Lugga, has urged the country’s Service Chiefs to resign due to their inability to address Nigeria’s escalating insecurity crisis, emphasizing the need for more capable military officers to take over the leadership of the armed forces.

Speaking at a special lecture organized by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Katsina State Chapter in commemoration of the state’s 37th anniversary, Lugga argued that the primary responsibility of the military and police is to protect the lives and property of citizens, a duty he believes they are currently failing to fulfill.

According to him, it is unacceptable to force communities to arm themselves for self-defense. He warned that such a practice would only exacerbate the existing security challenges.

Alternatively, Lugga suggested that if the federal government continues to be ineffective in tackling insecurity, the country’s constitution should be amended to grant states the authority to establish their own police forces.

Speaking at the ceremony, the state Deputy Governor, Lawal Faruk Jobe, commended the NUJ for organising the lecture and pledged the state government’s continued support for working journalists. He outlined the specific accomplishments of the Dikko Radda administration in various sectors to include improved education quality, enhanced healthcare services, increased agricultural productivity, expanded access to clean water, and the creation of new job opportunities.

The state chairman of NUJ, Tukur Dan Ali, expressed hope that the lecture would contribute to assessing the state’s progress and identifying areas for improvement. He commended both past and present leaders of Katsina State for their efforts in developing the state over the past 37 years.
