Ramadan Reflection 14: Sadaqah and Helping the Poor

    Published on

Ramadan is a month that revives social conscience and places the needs of the poor at the heart of worship. Fasting exposes the believer to hunger, making poverty more tangible and compassion more urgent.

This experiential awareness transforms charity from obligation into heartfelt concern.

The Qur’an repeatedly links righteousness with generosity:
“Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is to believe in Allah… and to give wealth, despite love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler.”
    (Qur’an 2:177)

Fasting nurtures this spirit of giving by breaking the illusion of self-sufficiency. Hunger humbles the soul and fosters gratitude, making the believer more responsive to the struggles of others. The Prophet (s.a.w) was known to be exceptionally generous in Ramadan:

“The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan.”
    (Bukhārī)

Helping the poor during Ramadan includes charity (ṣadaqah), zakāt distribution, feeding the hungry, and supporting vulnerable families. These acts purify wealth and cleanse the heart from greed. They also ensure that Ramadan’s blessings are shared across society.

Ramadan reflection reveals that fasting without generosity is incomplete. Hunger that does not inspire compassion fails to achieve its purpose. By giving to the poor, fasting fulfills its social objective—creating a just, caring, and spiritually conscious community.

Ultimately, helping the poor transforms Ramadan into a month of collective upliftment, where worship heals both the soul and society.
