The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has called on the federal government to implement economic policies that promote self-reliance and reduce dependence on food handouts.

This appeal comes in response to the recent tragic events that occurred during food distribution exercises in Abuja, Ibadan, and Anambra States, resulting in the loss of 45 lives.

In a statement signed by the league’s Spokesman, Dr. Ladan Salihu, the LND expressed its condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragedy.

“The LND extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by the recent tragic incidents during food distribution exercises in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, which claimed 45 lives in stampedes.

These heartbreaking events have left us deeply saddened,” Dr. Salihu said.
While commending the generosity of individuals and organizations providing relief to the vulnerable, the league emphasized the need for safer and more effective methods of delivering assistance.

“As Nigeria grapples with alarming levels of poverty, hunger, and destitution, the generosity of individuals and organizations providing relief to the vulnerable is highly commendable.

However, these tragedies highlight the urgent need for safer, more effective methods of delivering assistance,” Dr. Salihu noted.

To prevent such incidents in the future, the LND urged stakeholders to adopt measures such as crowd management, pre-registration of beneficiaries, multiple distribution centers, and partnership with law enforcement.

The league also called on the government to develop economic policies that address the root causes of poverty and hunger, thereby reducing the need for food handouts.

“More importantly, we call on the government to develop economic policies that foster self-sufficiency, reducing or even eliminating the need for such handouts.

Addressing the root causes of poverty and hunger is essential to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events,” Dr. Salihu emphasized.
