    Published on

    The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, in fulfillment of its mandate to promote, preserve, and propagate the rich cultural heritage of the state, hosted its annual Indigenous Traditional Competition at the Olusosun Recreation Ground, Oregun, Ikeja, on Thursday 7th August, 2025.

    The event brought to life cherished traditional activities such as the Ayo board game and traditional wrestling, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the Ikeja division. This year’s edition was zoned to Ikeja, but the Council emphasized that the competition rotates across the five IBILE divisions of Lagos State to ensure inclusivity and community engagement.

    Mr. Idowu Olulowo Johnson, Director of Arts and CEO of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, highlighted the significance of the event:

    “This competition promotes our way of life, fosters peaceful coexistence within communities, and educates the youth about their cultural roots. It also contributes to the local economy and strengthens our communal bonds.”

    Mr. Johnson also encouraged parents to support and allow their children to participate in future editions, emphasizing the role of youth in sustaining indigenous traditions.

    A special highlight of this year’s event was the Egungun masquerade performance, which added vibrancy and authenticity to the traditional wrestling segment. The event was officially declared open by High Chief Tajudeen Muili, the Osin Egungun of Oregun Land, who also coordinated the presence of the masquerades.

    The following individuals emerged as winners in various categories of the Ayo traditional board game and wrestling competition;

    Mr. Muyideen Adebayo claimed victory in the Ayo game, while Mr. Joshua Joseph triumphed in the traditional wrestling contest. Winners of the different competitions received gifts and recognition, further encouraging participation and fostering cultural pride.

    The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture remains committed to nurturing and celebrating the diverse traditions that define the spirit of Lagos.

    The closing remark was delivered by the Head of the Creative, Industry, and Heritage (CIH) Department, Mr. Hakeem Owolabi. In attendance were the Council management team and other distinguished guests from the Oregun Kingdom, all gathered for the memorable event.
