Insecurity worsens malnutrition, hunger in North West, North East — Coordinator

Published on

The North West Zonal Coordinator, Lauratu Ado Diso, has raised concerns over the devastating impact of banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency on food security in the North West and North East regions.

According to Diso, the insecurity situation has made it nearly impossible for farming activities to take place, exacerbating malnutrition and hunger in the region.

Diso, who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Planning and Budget, made this known during a 2-day zonal biannual review meeting on the implementation of food systems transformation pathways in Nigeria, held in Kano.

The Zonal Coordinator emphasized the need for collective efforts to eradicate the menace of insecurity, which has made the North West and North East zones the most vulnerable to malnutrition and hunger.

She called for effective implementation of Food System Transformation Pathways in all farms, stressing that collaboration and coordination are essential to changing the narrative in the region.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, represented by his Chief of Staff, Shehu Wada Sagagi, identified low productivity, post-harvest losses, and inadequate financial services as major challenges facing the agricultural sector.

He commended the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the convener of the national food system transformation pathways project for their efforts in addressing the pressing issues facing farmers.
