The Chief Missioner of Nadwat Ul Ahly Global Assembly, Dr. Rahman Adeyanju Lawal has advised parents to adopt a balanced approach, avoiding permissiveness and tyranny as way of checking the Gen Z and Alpha Generations.
Dr Lawal who was the guest lecturer at the Yoruba Tennis Club’s Ramadan Lecture 2025 held last Sunday at the Club House, Onikan, Lagos, stressed the importance of teaching children roles according to their sexes and divine dictates, ensuring males and females excel in their respective roles.
Speaking on the topic “Child Upbringing in the 21st century – The Gen Z and Alpha Generations,” Dr. Lawal highlighted the changing world of information technology and its impact on child upbringing, stressing that: “Parents cannot train the Gen Z the way their forebears trained them,” Dr. Lawal emphasized. “The world has changed, and we must adapt our parenting styles to meet the demands of the 21st century.”
He lamented the loss of communal parenting, where community members would discipline and correct children. “In modern times, community members often ignore a child’s wrongdoing, leaving parents to handle the issue alone, even as parents sometimes kick and threaten teachers for dare punishing their children,” Dr. Lawal noted.
The Lagos Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Lawal Pedro, SAN, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, corroborated Dr. Lawal’s teachings. “Parents must take time to guide their children and never leave them to the dynamic world of technology,” Pedro advised. “They must be guided to do the right thing.”
Pedro emphasized the importance of parental guidance in shaping the moral character of children. “As parents, we must be deliberate in teaching our children the values of honesty, integrity, and respect for others,” he said. “We must also lead by example, demonstrating the behaviors we expect from our children.”
The chairman of the club, Olakunle Agbebi, SAN, in his welcome address congratulated Muslims on another Ramadan, urging them to maximise the benefits inherent in the month and supplicate for Nigeria, Lagos state and Yoruba Tennis club.
