The Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development in Kaduna State, Hajiya Rabi Salisu has told women that cancer is not witchcraft or evil, but a treatable disease if detected early.

She spoke at the Fifth Chukker along Jos Road in Kaduna State at an event to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness, where she also advised women to prioritize their well-being and avoid using “kayan Mata,”( sex aphrodisiac)which she alleged could lead to cervical cancer.

In her goodwill message at the occasion,Hajiya Rabi Salisu commended participants and urged mothers to seize the opportunity for free screening available at the venue.

She emphasized that “cancer is not witchcraft or evil, but a treatable disease if detected early” and debunked harmful myths surrounding breast cancer, known locally in Hausa as “Sankaran Mama ko na Mahayfa.”

Sharing a poignant example, the Commissioner recalled a patient who tragically succumbed to breast cancer last year after refusing treatment, despite Fifth Chukker’s offer of support.

This, she said, underscored the urgency of awareness and timely healthcare.

She however, warned against harmful practices and advised women to prioritize their well-being and avoid using “kayan Mata,” which can lead to cervical cancer.

The Commissioner praised Fifth Chukker, Pink Hope, and partners for their dedication to the vital cause.

To further advance the fight against cancer, Hajiya Rabi Salisu advocated for expanding awareness campaigns into rural communities, fostering stronger collaborations and partnerships for a healthier future.
