The Nigerian Senate has received President Bola Tinubu’s communication regarding the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, but has postponed debate on the matter until 3 pm. This decision was made despite the motion being listed as the first item on the day’s Order Paper.

Instead, the Senate proceeded with the confirmation of nominations for appointment as members of the Police Service Commission (PSC). Senator Abdulhamid, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented the report, which was then considered by the Senate.
“The Senate do Receive and Consider the Report of the Committee on Police Affairs on the confirmation of the nominations of the following persons for appointment as Members of the Police Service Commission (PSC),” Senator Abdulhamid said while presenting his report.
The delay in debating President Tinubu’s declaration comes amidst a deepening crisis in Rivers State, which has been plagued by political instability, constitutional breaches, and security threats. The President’s decision to suspend Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly has sparked controversy, with many questioning the constitutionality of the move.
“We will ensure that the Senate thoroughly debates this critical issue and takes a decision that reflects the will of the Nigerian people,” said Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Leader of the Senate.
As the Senate prepares to debate the President’s declaration, all eyes are on the implications of this extraordinary measure for the people of Rivers State and the country as a whole.
