A startling revelation has emerged from the Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), indicating that road traffic crashes in Nigeria have claimed more lives than terrorist and bandit attacks.

This assertion was made by the Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, during a courtesy visit to the new leadership of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ).

Matazu cited statistics from October till date, highlighting the alarming number of fatalities resulting from road crashes compared to those caused by terrorist and bandit attacks.

He emphasized that the number of people killed in road traffic crashes far exceeds those killed by diseases or terrorist groups like Boko Haram, kidnappers, and bandits.

To combat this menace, Matazu appealed to media practitioners to collaborate with the FRSC in creating awareness and promoting better road use culture.

He noted that journalists play a crucial role in disseminating the FRSC’s messages to the public, particularly in remote areas.

The Sector Commander identified illiteracy as a significant contributor to the problem, stating that it is uncommon in other countries for people to accept being transported alongside animals in the boot of a car.

To address this, the FRSC has introduced programs encouraging passengers to speak up when drivers engage in reckless behavior.

In addition, the authorities have recognized the limitations of traditional public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks and are exploring alternative approaches, such as town hall meetings with stakeholders.

The Chairman of the Kano NUJ Council, Suleiman Dederi, assured the Sector Commander of the council’s support and commended the command for its cordial relationship with the media.
