The Ebonyi State Government has announced plans to provide free surgery and maternity care to its residents in 2025.
This initiative, declared by Governor Francis Nwifuru, aims to cushion the effects of economic hardship on the people of Ebonyi State.
According to Dr. Divine Igwe, Executive Secretary of the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBHIA), the agency will conduct free surgeries for all ailments every four months, starting from April 2025.
This program had already commenced last year, with several surgeries and treatments conducted free of charge by the agency.

In addition to free surgery, the state government has also announced plans to provide free delivery services for all pregnant women in the state.
This initiative, discussed with the governor’s wife, Ukamaka, aims to reduce the mortality rate among pregnant women and newborns.
To support this initiative, the EBHIA has urged individuals to enroll 100 persons into the Ebonyi Health Insurance Scheme by paying N1.5 million, which comes with the title of health insurance ambassador.
Furthermore, all companies, schools, and business owners with up to five staff members are required to enroll them in the health insurance programs on or before February 23, 2025.
Dr. Igwe expressed his gratitude to Governor Nwifuru and his wife for lifting his suspension, praising the governor’s leadership style as empowering and rewarding.
With this initiative, Ebonyi State takes a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage, providing its residents with access to quality and affordable healthcare services.
