KANO — Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, has reversed the name of Kano state owned University to immortalize late elder statesman, Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano to its former name, Northwest University Kano.

This decision to reverse the name was made during the state executive council sitting presided over by the Governor and based on the original purpose for which the university was established in 2012.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Higher Education, Sunusi Kofar Naisa, said to honour the late statesman, Dr. Yusuf Maitama Sule, the council has now approved the naming of a new higher institution in Ghari Local Government as Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies, Ghari.

According to the statement, “The institution is modeled after existing colleges like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Education in Tudun Wada, Audu Bako College in Dambatta, and Mallam Aminu Kano College, popularly known as Legal.

“The newly established Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies, Ghari, is expected to significantly contribute to teacher training and advanced studies in the state. It will stand as a symbol of respect and remembrance for the late elder statesman, alongside other institutions named after prominent figures from Kano.

“The council has directed that the relevant bills establishing the college and renaming the university be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative approval. Additionally, the council approved a policy reform extending the retirement age for professors at universities from 65 to 70 years and for academic staff in other higher institutions from 60 to 65 years.

“This development highlights the government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Kano’s prominent figures while enhancing access to quality education. The renaming of Northwest University and the establishment of Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education reflect Kano’s recognition of its leaders’ contributions to national development.

“As the state awaits legislative endorsement, these decisions mark a transformative step in education and public service in Kano State, according to the Hon. Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata,” the statement reads.
