A helicopter carrying eight people, including six passengers and two crew members, crashed into the ocean on October 24, 2024, after taking off from Port Harcourt NAF Base.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) confirmed the incident in a statement released by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye.
According to Soneye, contact with the helicopter, registered as 5NBQG and operated by East Winds Aviation, was lost at approximately 11:22 am. The helicopter was headed to the FPSO-NUIMS ANTAN when the accident occurred.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with three bodies recovered so far. The Ministry of Aviation has been notified and has issued a press statement. NNPCL continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
Soneye expressed condolences to the families of those on board, stating, “Our prayers are with the passengers, crew, and their respective families at this very difficult time.” He also assured that NNPCL would support the ongoing search and rescue operation in every possible way.
