Nigeria—As Cooperative societies in Nigeria join their counterparts in different parts of the world to mark the 2025 International Day of Cooperatives, the President of Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, CFN, High Chief Tajudeen Oriyomi AYEOLA, in a spirited address to Nigerian cooperators, emphasis has been placed on the critical role cooperatives play in fostering inclusive development and community development across the nation.
In his speech, Ayeola expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering dedication of cooperative members, stating, “I extend warm greetings to you all and commend your steadfast commitment to the principles of cooperation, solidarity and shared prosperity.” He highlighted the multifaceted contributions of cooperatives, saying, “Across Nigeria and the world — from vibrant urban centers to the most remote villages — cooperatives have become lifelines, offering crucial services, creating economic opportunities, and standing as beacons of hope for millions.”
The occasion served as a reflection not only on achievements but also on future challenges and opportunities. Ayeola stressed, “Our cooperative movement has promoted sustainable agricultural practices to enhance food security and support farmers, strengthening economic resilience, especially during tough economic times.” He added, “We’ve facilitated access to capital for productive ventures, education, and welfare initiatives that transform lives and communities.”
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive & Sustainable Solutions for a Better World,” resonated throughout the address. Ayeola underscored its significance, saying, “It reaffirms our duty to champion sustainability, economic equity, and social cohesion—ensuring a brighter, fairer future for generations to come.”

However, he did not shy away from acknowledging ongoing struggles, noting, “Issues such as insecurity, community conflicts, economic instability, and rising living costs continue to affect our members and restrict our potential impact.” To overcome these hurdles, he called for embracing “innovation, technology, and sound corporate governance,” all while remaining true to cooperative principles.
A significant part of his speech was dedicated to fostering future leadership within the movement. “Our youth are the future custodians of this noble movement; we must actively engage and empower them to carry forward the spirit of cooperation,” he urged. Similarly, the vital role of women was celebrated, with Ayeola emphasizing, “Women are essential drivers of sustainable practices and membership growth. We salute their contributions and urge them to continue leading with resilience and purpose.”
The President also expressed gratitude to the Nigerian federal government, praising the efforts of the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security. “His unwavering engagement with cooperative stakeholders across the country is truly commendable,” he remarked.
He concluded with a rallying cry for unity and collective action: “Let us continue to deepen collaboration, share knowledge, and support one another. Together, we can build stronger cooperatives and improve lives across Nigeria.”
