ABUJA– THE Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu has given insight into why he went to court to challenge his impeachment by Governor Godwin Obaseki using the State House of Assembly.
Shaibu who noted that he decided to drag Obaseki and others to Court to send a strong message to the outgoing Governor and would be governor, just as he said that one of the reasons is to give the office of the Deputy Governor the respect it deserves.
Speaking with Journalists in Abuja, Shaibu who noted that he fought his impeachment to enrich the nation’s jurisprudence, said that Obaseki will not be sleeping now because his tenure is ending.
Shaibu said: “By the grace of God, democracy has come to stay in Nigeria, it may have its teething problems, but we must support it to survive. Many will wonder, I feel like I have been fighting for years, after the issue of impeachment, why is he fighting, why is he fighting? I want to enrich jurisprudence, and you can see that it has enriched jurisprudence as far as Nigeria is concerned.
“Some of these characters in politics are not democrats, so, we need to fight them to make sure that people who are not democrats have no business in a democratic setting.
“Because we fought for democracy, only democratic players will be allowed to flourish and function in a democratic setting. Not people, in quote, that are civilians, but they are worse than a military dictator, that is my fight in the Edo State.
“I decided that we must fight this battle. Today we are in court, and the case is adjourned to the 25th of November. Many will wonder, I am already seeing some media saying, ah, tenure has ended. No, there is no tenure in criminal activity. Any criminal issue has no tenure. So, anybody thinking tenure is ending on the 12th, so it has ended, no.
“This one is not an election petition matter that has time bound. Criminality has no time bound. It’s a life trial.
“So, we will take this thing to the end to enrich Nigerian Jurisprudence. And why we need to take it to the end is to also send a strong warning, a message to anybody that will be governor and want to be dictator like Governor Godwin Obaseki. That’s the message I want to send you.

“Also, to give the office of the deputy governor nationwide the name that it actually deserved. Because for me, the institution of the governor’s office and the institution of the deputy governor’s office, the institution of the President and Vice President, the institution of the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Speaker, Senate President, must be respected.
“No governor should disrespect the institution of the deputy governor. No deputy governor should disrespect the institution of the office of the governor. That is the point I want to make.
“No one governor can be governor without a deputy. No one deputy governor can be deputy governor without a governor. You know, because many have kept quiet for long, some of these characters that are anti-democratic want to take things for granted.”
The Deputy Governor who noted that he was on the side of the law, said, “that is why today, I can hit my chest. I know Obaseki will not be sleeping now because his tenure is ending. I sleep and sleep well because I have always been on the side of law.
“When you are on the side of law, you can never get it wrong. But when you are not on the side of law, no matter how slow you think it is, it will catch up with you.”
