UBTH resident doctors protest colleagues’ seven months in kidnappers den

RESIDENT doctors at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has staged a peaceful protest calling for the released of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola who has been in kidnappers den in Kaduna state for the past seven months.

Popoola, a medical practitioner at National Eye Care Kaduna, was abducted along with her husband and a visiting nephew when bandits raided the staff quarters of the hospital, on December 27, 2023 but her husband was later released health grounds.

The doctors matched through various paths in the UBTHl complex carrying placards with various inscriptions.

They were joined the protest by newly elected chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Edo State, Dr. Eustace Oseghale.

Speaking, the President of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-UBTH), Dr Erah Ikhide Eugene expresses their displeasure on the continued detention of Popoola by her abductors.

He said “In a time when the Nigerian health sector is suffering severe brain drain, one would only expect that the little we have are kept jealously safe and secured.

“The safety of the health of a nation can not be guaranteed if the health service provider is not safe.

“We are calling on the Kaduna state government, the federal government and all security agencies to ensure the safe release of Dr. Popoola. You can only imagine the emotional and psychological trauma she has been passing through in the hand of the kidnappers for this seven monts and the agony members of her family would have been experiencing.” He said.
