A tragic incident occurred on December 6, 2024, in Ozoro, Delta State, where a 17-year-old boy, Emeka Odogwu, was fatally shot by a police officer over an altercation involving fireworks. The officer allegedly fired at close range, killing Emeka instantly.

The police have identified and detained the officer responsible, with the Area Commander, ACP Zakari Mohammed, ordering the arrest and detention upon learning of the incident.

However, there’s conflicting information regarding Emeka’s student status at Delta State University of Science and Technology, with some sources denying his enrollment.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and heightened tension in the university town, with many condemning the unprofessional behavior of junior police officers.

Human rights activist Victor Ojie criticized the recurring civilian killings in Delta State, citing previous incidents, including the shooting of a Nollywood cameraman and the suspicious death of a young man in Asaba.

The detained officer is expected to face further action, potentially being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
