TRAGEDY: Naval Seaman opens fire, kills colleague in Zamfara over heated argument

A Shocking incident has unfolded in Zamfara state, where a naval seaman, Leading Seaman LS Akila, opened fire on his colleague during an argument, resulting in the colleague’s death.

The tragic event occurred early Friday morning in Dansadau, Maru Local Government Area.

According to reports, the two personnel were serving at Team 3, formerly Operation Hadarin Daji, now renamed Operation Sheto Yanma, when the argument escalated into violence. LS Akila used his service rifle to fatally shoot his colleague.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the incident, stating that LS Akila has been arrested, disarmed, and detained. An investigation is currently underway, and the case will be referred to a standing court martial to address the misconduct.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed to the public yet, as the administrative procedure for notifying the family is ongoing. The Defence headquarters has urged the media to exercise caution in reporting to avoid further distressing the family.

This incident highlights the growing concerns about violence and conflict within the military ranks in Zamfara state, which has been plagued by banditry and terrorist attacks.

“Thereafter, he was arrested, disarmed, detained and investigation has since commenced into the case.

“After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial setup to address such misdemeanor among troops.

“Meanwhile, the administrative procedure for notifying the family of the deceased is ongoing.

“It is for this reason his name is not yet released to the public. Nevertheless, the name will be released in due course.”

“Accordingly, we urge the media to exercise caution in reporting in order not to further demoralise the family of the deceased, please.”
