A coalition of traditionalists, spearheaded by the Ose Meji Foundation, has taken a proactive stance against environmental pollution in Oyo State.
In partnership with the Oyo State Ministry of Environment, the coalition organised a significant cleanup of the Osuntoki River in the Olorunkemi community, located in the Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.

The initiative, according to them, is aimed to highlight the pressing issues surrounding water pollution and the importance of environmental sanitation.
The founder of the Isese Renaissance Society, Ayinke Ifatoromade-Otaoti Adefemi, explained that the cleanup was prompted by a viral video depicting traditional rites being performed on an infant in the polluted river.
This footage, he said, sparked widespread criticism and served as a rallying call for action within both the Isese community and the broader public.
Adefemi emphasised that their investigation into the local conditions revealed serious waste disposal challenges faced by both Orisa adherents and other residents.
Grateful for the government’s support, she stated, “We reached out to the authorities, and their involvement has been invaluable to the success of this cleanup effort.”
Highlighting the connection between traditional beliefs and environmental stewardship, Adefemi remarked, “As practitioners of Isese, we hold a deep respect for nature. Our commitment to preserving the environment is integral to our faith, and we are eager to collaborate with others to promote grassroots initiatives that enhance our ecosystem.”
In his remark, the Deputy Director of Environmental Health Services at the Ministry of Environment, Basit Akorede, underscored the legal ramifications of environmental violations, noting that improper waste disposal can lead to a two-month imprisonment or a fine of up to N50,000.
He urged residents to engage with licensed waste management contractors to prevent disease outbreaks.
Also in a remark, the CEO of Alluvia Unique Concept, Adetunji Lam Adeshina, reiterated the importance of the programme, stating that it aims to educate the public on effective solid waste management practices.
