A severe auto accident in Ibadan, Oyo State, has resulted in the deaths of six individuals and left five others injured.

The collision, involving a trailer transporting tiles and a lorry loaded with soft drinks, occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko, along Akanran Road on Monday.

It was gathered that among the injured was a pupil whose mother reportedly died in the crash, while four of the injured were taken to Amuloko City Hospital, where two primary school children were treated as outpatients.

The other two individuals, suffering from severe injuries, have been admitted for further treatment. The deceased were transported to an unknown hospital.

According to an anonymous source from the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA), the accident happened in the early hours of the day.

The source stated that brake failure on the descending trailer caused it to lose control, crashing into a tricycle, commonly known as Keke NAPEP, while the second lorry, attempting to avoid a collision with the trailer, ran over another Keke NAPEP.

The OYRTMA representative confirmed that six people died and five were injured, all of whom have been removed from the scene.

The incident resulted in significant traffic congestion, forcing many passengers to abandon their vehicles and walk.

Several cars were parked at the roadside, awaiting the arrival of security personnel to clear the area. In total, four vehicles were damaged in the multi-vehicle collision, including two articulated vehicles and two tricycles.

Sympathisers at the scene, prevented from damaging the vehicles, expressed frustration at the drivers, who had fled.

They argued that the accident could have been mitigated if the trailer driver had swerved into a ditch instead of heading directly towards the tricycles.

Multiple security agencies responded to the scene, including members of Operation Burst, OYRTMA, the Police, Road Safety officials, Amotekun, and local vigilantes.

Dr. Raji Wale, the Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, confirmed in an interview that four patients were admitted following the accident.

“The accident occurred in the early hours of today, Monday. Six victims were brought here with varying degrees of injury, and some were taken to other hospitals. We managed to treat those who came to us.”

“Two have been stabilized and discharged, while two children are still being treated. One child was in the Keke NAPEP with his mother, who sadly did not survive,” Dr. Raji explained.

When contacted, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the state, confirmed the accident but stated she would provide a detailed report after receiving a briefing from her team.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Adewole Osifeso also indicated that the FRSC Commander would give a comprehensive account of the incident.
