Senator representing Ogun East and former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has said that the people of Remo in Ogun State have dropped the agitation for the creation of Remo State, instead, they prefer to join hands with their Ijebu kinsmen to facilitate the creation of an Ijebu-Remo State within the current Ogun State framework.

Daniel also commended the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu for its dedication to good governance. He praised the administration’s various economic reforms and policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians and fostering national development.

These remarks were made during the 4th Asiwaju of Remo Christians Choir Festival, which took place at Abraham’s Tabernacle Ecumenical Worship Centre in Sagamu on Sunday. The event drew community members and faith leaders who gathered to celebrate faith and culture.

The Senator announced that the people of Remo have expressed their willingness to collaborate with their Ijebu neighbors, provided their cultural identity remains protected. They have proposed that the new state—should it be created—be called Ijebu-Remo, similar to how Akwa-Ibom State was named, reflecting their cultural ties.

Commenting on the broader national situation, Daniel emphasized that Nigerians should focus on the positive outcomes of President Tinubu’s economic reforms rather than the initial discomfort caused by these changes. He highlighted that the President is quietly implementing a series of revolutionary measures aimed at national stability, good governance, and shared prosperity.

Daniel pointed out specific achievements, such as the recent activation of funds for local governments—many of which had been non-functional for years—and the establishment of the Southwest Development Commission. These initiatives, he explained, mirror the regional arrangements of the past and signify a strategic direction for Nigeria’s future development.

His words: “For instance, for some years now, the local government that are the closest to the people are not functional, they were not funded and could not do anything to improve the life of the people at the grassroots, but in the last few months and with efforts of President Tinubu, all of these are changing, money is now being released to our local governments.

“Similarly, sometimes last year, we started an experiment on the Development Commissions. When we started this process, many thought that it was not going to happen, but today the President has assented to this bill establishing the Southwest Development Commission.

“What this means is that aside from the federal, the state and the local governments, we now have a quasi-regional government and when you look at what the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo did when we had regional government, then you can begin to appreciate the strategic direction of Mr. President”.
