The true purpose of fasting is not hunger or thirst but taqwa—the consciousness and fear of Allah.
Allah clearly states: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa.” (Qur’an 2:183)
Taqwa guides the fasting person in private and public. It reminds the believer that Allah sees even when no one else does. A fast guided by taqwa protects the eyes from sinful sights, the tongue from harmful speech, and the heart from evil intentions.
The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) warned:
“There are people who fast and gain nothing from it except hunger and thirst.”
This shows that fasting without fear of Allah loses its value. Taqwa is what transforms fasting into a shield against sin and a means of purification.
As guidance, fasting Muslims should renew their intention daily, remember Allah often, avoid doubtful actions, and strive for sincerity. Fear Allah in business dealings, family relations, speech, and online behavior.
When taqwa guides the fast, Ramadan leaves a lasting impact. It reforms character, strengthens faith, and prepares the believer for righteousness beyond the month. This is the true success of fasting.
