The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have condemned the arrest of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajero, by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The PDP has cautioned the President Bola Tinubu-led administration against indiscriminate arrests, urging him to focus on addressing rising inflation, poverty, hunger, and security challenges.

The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, said the government should channel its energy towards addressing the nation’s welfare challenges, rather than arresting innocent citizens.

He lamented that the government’s policies are draconian and insensitive, causing Nigerians to suffer. Ologunagba emphasized that the government exists for the welfare and security of the people, but none of these are currently being addressed.

The TUC also demanded Ajero’s immediate and unconditional release, condemning the arrest as a violation of his rights to freedom of association and expression, adding that the labour movement had always stood for peaceful negotiations.

TUC also urged rhe government to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation over harassment.

The PDP and TUC have urged the government to prioritize the welfare and security of the people, rather than engaging in actions that could throw the nation into chaos. They demand that the government respect the rule of law, democratic norms, and the legitimate rights of workers and their representatives.
