Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola, has refuted claims that the Egba people have consistently undermined the Ogun West region’s aspirations for the governorship since the establishment of Ogun State in 1976.

Speaking during his 64th birthday celebration hosted by the Ogun Women-in-Politics at the GRA Ibara residence of former Governor Segun Osoba, Ishola emphasized that Egba politicians have historically supported the ambitions of Ogun West candidates. He cited instances where prominent Egba figures rallied behind Yewa candidates, including the late Tunji Olurin in 2011 and Gboyega Nasir Isiaka in 2019, both of whom received significant backing from Egba leaders.

Ishola condemned the prevailing hostile political climate in Ogun State, urging politicians to adopt a more collaborative approach. He stated, “No meaningful development can take place in a hostile political environment,” and called for a cessation of divisive politics, which he believes hinders progress.

Highlighting the importance of unity, Ishola remarked that the political success seen in Lagos is a result of friendly successions. He noted the turbulent transitions in Ogun State, from Governor Segun Osoba to Gbenga Daniel, then to Ibikunle Amosun, and currently to Dapo Abiodun, which have not fostered the desired development.

To address these issues, Ishola has engaged in discussions with key political figures, including former governors and traditional leaders, to advocate for a more harmonious political landscape in Ogun State. He expressed concern over the lack of representation for the Egba people in key political positions since 2019, emphasizing the need for Ogun Central to be considered for the governorship in the upcoming 2027 elections.

In closing, Ishola thanked the Ogun Women-in-Politics for their support and encouraged them to promote a culture of peaceful political engagement to facilitate development and progress in the state.
