The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has laid out its conditions for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, currently before the National Assembly.
According to Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, Chairman of the LND and former Kano State Governor, the bills must address concerns raised by a technical committee set up to review the proposals.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Shekarau emphasized that the LND views the tax reform bills as an opportunity to advance Nigeria’s economic stability while addressing constitutional, socio-cultural, and governance concerns.

However, he stressed that comprehensive amendments are necessary to ensure inclusivity, national cohesion, and equitable resource distribution.
The LND’s stance comes amid growing opposition to the tax reform bills from northern governors and lawmakers, who argue that the proposals would disproportionately benefit Lagos State and disadvantage other regions.
The bills have sparked intense debate, with some critics arguing that they would exacerbate existing economic inequalities.
In light of these concerns, the LND’s recommendations for amendments are seen as a crucial step towards building consensus and ensuring that the tax reform bills benefit all Nigerians.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the National Assembly will heed the LND’s call for comprehensive amendments.
