The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, emphasized the need for a united effort from all Nigerians to address the country’s security challenges during his confirmation hearing before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army.
Oluyede pledged to bring lasting peace to Nigeria if confirmed as the substantive Chief of Army Staff. He highlighted his over 30 years of service to the nation, noting that his experience in national security issues has prepared him for the assignment. “I see my nomination as a privileged opportunity to bring about positive changes to the Nigerian Army,” he stated.

The Army Chief stressed the importance of strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with neighboring countries and deep collaboration among services and security agencies. He commended the current administration’s efforts to provide an enabling security environment for socioeconomic activities to thrive.
Oluyede also emphasized the need for tactical aircraft to support army operations, explaining that “air support at the tactical level is crucial for combat operations.” He acknowledged robust cooperation between the armed forces and expressed his intention to enhance this cooperation for better security and socioeconomic development.
Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, acknowledged Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, communal clashes, and cyber threats. He emphasized the need for innovative strategies to address these threats, stressing that the military must be well-equipped and trained to tackle emerging challenges.
Benson underscored the importance of legislative oversight and support for the armed forces, promising to provide necessary legal frameworks, advocate for funding, and monitor appropriations to ensure accountability and transparency.
The outcome of Oluyede’s screening exercise will be reviewed and presented to the House during plenary on Thursday.
