New Zone 2 Police Chief, AIG Jimoh warns officers, declares war on corruption, rights abuses

Published on

LAGOS — The newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, Olundare Moshood Jimoh, formally assumed office on Monday with a strong pledge to enforce zero tolerance for corruption, human rights violations, and unprofessional conduct among officers.

Zone 2 Command covers both Lagos and Ogun State Police Commands.

Delivering his inaugural address, Jimoh warned that officers found guilty of misconduct would face strict disciplinary measures. He stressed that his administration would be anchored on professionalism, accountability, and respect for human dignity.

“There must be zero tolerance to corruption and corrupt tendencies by officers. There must equally be zero tolerance to human rights violations in all ramifications,” he declared.

The AIG cautioned against unlawful detention, directing that suspects in minor offences must not be held beyond 24 to 48 hours without charge, except where permitted by law.

Jimoh described his appointment as “an honour and a call to service,” assuring residents of Lagos and Ogun of enhanced security through intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and stronger community engagement.

“We will continue to strategise and work harder to remove the fear of crime and criminality in the minds of the people and ensure that the low crime rate in these states is sustained and further reduced to the barest minimum,” he said.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Lagos and Ogun to Nigeria’s economy and security, Jimoh called for closer collaboration with community leaders, youths, traders, traditional rulers, and government officials, stressing that “security is a collective responsibility.”

He also issued a stern warning to criminal networks:

“To the good people of Lagos and Ogun states, the police is your partner. We want you to own your police force so that together we can build a safer and more secure society. To criminals, leave this zone — we are ready to dismantle your operations.”

Jimoh announced reforms to curb indiscriminate transfer of cases to the zonal headquarters, insisting only special or assigned cases would be handled at that level. He further directed officers to avoid meddling in civil and land disputes, warning against disguising such matters as criminal cases.

The AIG commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission for the recent promotion of six officers within the zone, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in them through discipline and adherence to ethics.

He also acknowledged the support of the Lagos State Government during his tenure as Commissioner of Police, pledging to build on existing security gains while prioritising officer welfare to boost efficiency.

Jimoh concluded by urging the media to foster constructive engagement between the police and the public, cautioning against publishing unverified claims that could undermine the force’s integrity.
