The National Examinations Council (NECO) has taken a significant step in its global expansion drive by establishing a new Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) centre in London, United Kingdom. This move is part of the council’s commitment to educational inclusivity for Nigerians in the diaspora.
Empowering Nigerian Students Abroad
According to Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, the initiative aims to provide opportunities for Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK who have been unable to complete secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications. “Our objective is to provide credible and accessible examination opportunities for Nigerians residing abroad in line with the Federal Government’s education policy on inclusivity and global engagement,” he explained.
Benefits of the New Centre
The London centre is expected to bring far-reaching benefits, including empowering the diaspora, strengthening national pride, enhancing global recognition, and creating economic and social dividends. NECO certificates are recognized by several prestigious institutions in the UK, including Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, as well as universities in the US, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

Government Support
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, lauded NECO for the initiative, stating that it aligns with the Ministry’s vision to ensure no Nigerian child is left behind. “The establishment of the NECO SSCE Centre in London is a crucial step in serving our diaspora community. The Federal Ministry of Education sees the diaspora not just as a community to serve but as a resource to be empowered,” he said. “Every Nigerian student deserves an education that enables them to compete and thrive globally.”
Partnership and Collaboration
The centre was set up in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd (BEP Education), which provides a vital alternative for Nigerian students in the UK who face challenges within the British education system. NECO and the Nigerian High Commission in London have pledged to collaborate on advancing Nigeria’s educational and developmental objectives in the UK.
Global Expansion
NECO’s global expansion drive is evident in its administration of examinations in seven countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with new centres awaiting accreditation in Egypt and Burkina Faso.
