The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has hailed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for recovering an expansive estate in Abuja, comprising 753 units of duplexes and other apartments, from a corrupt former government official.

This landmark recovery, made possible by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie’s ruling on December 2, 2024, marks the largest single asset recovery by the EFCC since its inception in 2003.

The forfeited estate spans 150,500 square meters, situated on Plot 109 Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, and was allegedly built using proceeds from corrupt activities by a top government functionary.

Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, NANS Clerk of the Senate, applauded EFCC Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, for tackling corruption in government and private sectors. Odunayo emphasized that Nigeria would benefit from intensified anti-corruption efforts, urging the EFCC to pursue more government officials engaging in unlawful practices.

NANS described the recovery as a “huge achievement,” commending the EFCC’s relentless efforts to combat economic and financial crimes. The organization believes this forfeiture order will send a strong message to other corrupt public and government officials.

Odunayo further called on the EFCC to investigate government ministries, parastatals and agencies, targeting top officials with suspicious wealth.

He also urged the commission to extend its asset tracing and recovery policy to state levels and continue internal sanitation to weed out corrupt officials and collaborators, maintaining the agency’s integrity.
