Olatunji Disu was sworn in as Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by President Bola Tinubu, just 48 days before his retirement. Disu, a seasoned police officer with over 33 years of service, was taken aback by the appointment, saying it came at a time he wasn’t expecting it.
During his address, Disu made it clear that the era of impunity is over and vowed to prioritize the welfare of police officers, protection of citizens, and discipline within the force. He stressed that no police force can succeed without the cooperation of the public, emphasizing that citizens are the boss and should be treated with respect and care.
Disu’s top priorities include improving the welfare of police officers, as he believes motivated officers perform better. He also vowed to root out corruption and ensure zero tolerance for human rights abuses. The new IGP’s appointment comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in Nigeria, including banditry and insurgency. He pledged to tackle these issues head-on, praising the efforts of his officers while promising sharper focus.
Disu’s words were emotional as he recalled President Tinubu’s speech highlighting his career achievements, saying it almost brought him to tears. He interpreted the President’s endorsement as both recognition and a challenge to bring peace, recognition, and order to the country.
