Muslim Profiling: The Silent Crisis Behind Plateau Killings

*AMURIC warns against pattern of targeted killings in Jos crisis

Published on

The Anguish of families in Jos, Plateau State, deepened with the recent massacre in Angwa Rukuba, where innocent Nigerians were brutally murdered. Among the victims was Haruna, a young corps member who had been preparing for his Passing-Out Parade,  a milestone that should have marked the beginning of his future. Instead, his life was cut short in a horrifying act of violence.

According to accounts, Haruna was reportedly singled out and killed based on his identity. The Amalgamation of Muslim Rights Concern (AMURIC) described this as “both alarming and deeply disturbing,” warning that such targeted killings reflect the dangerous consequences of unchecked incitement and divisive narratives.

In its statement, AMURIC drew attention to several unresolved incidents involving Muslim citizens who were attacked while carrying out everyday activities — travelers ambushed on highways, traders cut down on their way to markets, and worshippers murdered in their places of prayer. These killings, the group stressed, were not random acts of violence but deliberate attacks where victims were singled out based on their identity.

“Justice must not be selective. All perpetrators of violence, regardless of their background or affiliation, must be identified and brought to justice without delay,” AMURIC insisted.

The group said Haruna’s story was a chilling reminder of how profiling has become a death sentence for many.

Similar stories echo across Plateau State: Travelers stopped at checkpoints, asked their names, and executed when identified as belonging to a particular faith; Traders attacked on market days, their goods destroyed, their lives ended in cold blood; Worshippers assaulted in sacred spaces, their prayers interrupted by violence.

These incidents, AMURIC noted, remain unresolved, leaving families without closure and communities trapped in fear.

Beyond the killings themselves, AMURIC condemned what it called “selective reporting” and one-sided narratives that portray the crisis as affecting only one religious group. The organisation warned that such distortions fuel division and hinder reconciliation.

It also criticized commentators whose rhetoric stigmatizes entire communities, saying such language is irresponsible and capable of inciting further violence in an already fragile environment.

“Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and cannot be reduced to narrow or biased religious interpretations,” the group emphasized.

AMURIC urged security agencies to conduct impartial investigations and bring all perpetrators to justice. It called on government authorities to guarantee fairness and protection for all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity. The group also appealed to religious leaders, community stakeholders, and the media to promote restraint and accurate information.

The organisation stressed that national unity can only be sustained through justice, equity, and mutual respect. It warned that no society can achieve peace when injustice is tolerated or when certain groups feel marginalized.

AMURIC’s message is clear: The killings of Muslim travelers, traders, worshippers, and young Nigerians like Haruna are not just statistics — they are human lives cut short, families devastated, and communities fractured, urging security apparatus to confront the pattern of targeted killings with truth, justice, and fairness.
