The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has vociferously condemned a recent attack on Muslims by masqueraders during a public outing in Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, July 25th, 2025, has sparked concern among the Muslim community and calls for urgent action to prevent future violence.

According to reports, a masquerader identified as Lobanika assaulted an Imam walking along the street by using a stick to snatch the Imam’s cap. On the same day, the masquerader reportedly stormed Oṣaro market and attacked another Muslim individual with a cutlass. These acts of violence have provoked outrage and condemnation from MURIC, which describes them as “absurd, criminal, demeaning, nonsensical and completely unacceptable.”

In a statement issued Monday, Amb. Malam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary of MURIC Oyo State, emphasized the organization’s stance: “Our motto remains ‘Dialogue, Not Violence.’ Such barbaric acts threaten the peaceful coexistence we cherish in our multireligious society. We urge all stakeholders of the Egungun Festival to take immediate steps to control and caution those involved in masquerade activities, especially during this sensitive period.”

While condemning the attack, MURIC also called for restraint amidst reports of alleged reprisals by Muslims in Ogbomosho. “Two wrongs do not make a right,” Agunbiade stated. “We appeal to Muslims across the state to exercise patience and avoid inflammatory actions that could escalate the crisis.”

The organization further appealed to security agencies to warn masquerades against attacking Muslims or mosques, warning that such actions could exacerbate tensions further. “The safety and rights of all citizens, regardless of faith, must be protected,” the statement declared.

Attention is also being drawn to the upcoming Ololu Masquerade Festival, scheduled to commence on Monday, July 28th, 2025, in Ibadan. Multiple reports indicate growing anxiety that this event could ignite further unrest amid the recent violence. MURIC has urged the Oyo State Government and security agencies to intervene promptly and decisively to prevent any attacks or intimidation during the festivities.

In conclusion, Amb. Agunbiade appealed for calm and restraint from all Muslims in the state, emphasizing that “peaceful coexistence is paramount and that we must all work together to maintain it.”
