Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, President, African School of Governance, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, have bagged the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) good governance award and Anofi Guobadia award for leadership and excellence respectively.

Alhaji Tijjani Borodo, President, CIoD, made this known on Thursday night in Lagos at the Institute’s 2024 Annual Directors Dinner and Awards Night.

Other awardees include Dr Cosmas Maduka, Founder, Coscharis Group and Mrs Bola Adesola, Chairman, Ecobank Nigeria.

They won the CIoD entrepreneurial award and Olutoyin Olakunri Woman Director of the year award respectively, while Seplat bagged the institute’s good governance award.

The president of CIoD said the awardees’ unrelenting advocacy for good governance within and outside the country had been an inspiration to the institute.

This, he said, was important as the institute partnered other stakeholders to drive the cause of good corporate governance in the public and private sectors of the economy.

“Traditionally, the Annual Directors’ Dinner (ADD) is very important to the institute as it is the occasion for celebrating achievers.

“It is also in recognition of invaluable contributions of individuals and organisations that have modeled ethical leadership and high standard of corporate governance practices.

“This year’s edition is spectacularly unique as there would also be appreciation awards for many leaders in CIoD Nigeria, who have served the institute meritoriously over the years,” he said.

Borodo revealed that seven past presidents and 16 executive committee chairmen of the institute receiving the awards, would also be stepping down as members of the governing council and executive committee respectively.

This, he said, was in compliance with the new charter Act of the institute, that necessitated some governance changes.

“Your achievements are a testament to your hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

“We are proud to recognise your achievements tonight, and we look forward to seeing more stellar impacts of your pursuit of good governance and forthright leadership in the years to come,” he said.

Moghalu, also a former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), described CIoD as one of Nigeria’s most respected institutes, championing professional corporate governance principles across all sectors of the economy.

He said governance remained a very fundamental principle of human existence, and the difference between a civilised and uncivilised society.

According to him, the matter of governance is so fundamental to our existence down to family structure, and not just to businesses for progress and the creation of value.

He recalled that during his time with the CBN, he was tasked to reform the financial system to bring new standards of corporate governance, from which many aspects of private sector had emulated and grown with.

“But there is a problem; you can have corporate governance all you want in the private sector but if you do not have good governance in the public sector, then there is a gap that needs to be plugged.

“The absence of good and competent governance is why we have all the other problems, so we need to emphasise the entrenchment of good and competent governance in the public sector.

“This will help the private sector continually create wealth and prosperity for the country,” he said.

Moghalu added that while governance brought economic transformation, politics without governance is a merry go round of poverty and insecurity.

He charged CIoD to make it a point of duty to push harder for corporate governance standards in the public sector. NAN
