Midnight nightmare in Oworonshoki as govt demolishes 70 houses

Published on

The Darkness of Saturday night turned into a nightmare for hundreds of residents in Oworonshoki, Lagos, as bulldozers and security operatives descended upon their community, demolishing over 70 homes despite a court order to stop.

The demolition exercise, which began around midnight, left a trail of destruction and despair in its wake, displacing families and leaving them with nothing but the clothes they wore.

Mrs. Adenike, a heavily pregnant woman, recounted the terrifying experience. “They told us the court had stopped the demolition, so we stayed. But around 1 a.m., bulldozers came again. I ran out barefoot with my children. We lost everything.” Her voice trembled as she spoke, still trying to process the trauma.

Mr. Adewale, a distraught landlord, lamented, “Our homes were demolished in the middle of the night without warning, despite the court injunction. People slept outside in the cold with their children. This is not just painful; it’s inhumane.”

The community is outraged, claiming the demolition is a violation of the rule of law and a betrayal of public trust. They are demanding that the Lagos State Government respect the court order and provide compensation for the affected residents.
