The Lagos State Government, through the State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has begun the removal of shanties and illegal structures near the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi, Lagos.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to enforce compliance with building planning laws, promote urban development, and maintain a safe and orderly environment.

Arc. Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, emphasized over the weekend that this operation aims to address environmental and security challenges linked to unauthorized constructions in the state.

“The exercise is essential for improving the urban landscape, ensuring the safety of lives and properties, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents,” Oki stated.

He noted that prior to the removal of the illegal structures and shanties, all necessary notices had been served to the affected occupants, including quit and demolition notices.

Oki highlighted, “Despite several warnings and ample time given for compliance, illegal structures have continued to emerge in these areas, constituting a nuisance. We cannot afford to fold our arms while these unapproved structures threaten the safety and orderliness of our city.”

He further explained that this action is part of LASBCA’s broader mandate to ensure that all buildings within Lagos State adhere to approved development plans and comply with the State’s Building Regulations.

Oki reiterated that his agency remains committed to promoting sustainable urban development, stressing that enforcement actions will continue in other areas where illegal developments are identified.
