Lagos Assembly in turmoil as Police back Obasa’s claim to Speakership

*Youths kick, call for Intervention as crisis escalates

Published on

The Assembly of Lagos Youths has called on the President, the Inspector General of Police, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and uphold democratic norms in Lagos State.

“The will of the people, as expressed through their elected representatives, must be respected, and any attempt to subvert democracy must be firmly resisted,” said Lasisi Robert, spokesperson for the group.
The call for intervention comes as the Lagos State House of Assembly is embroiled in a deepening crisis. Former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa continues to preside over legislative proceedings despite being removed from office by a two-thirds majority. Obasa’s actions are backed by security personnel under the supervision of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh.
The withdrawal of security aides attached to Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda and the reinstatement of Obasa’s security details have raised concerns about the impartiality of the Nigerian Police Force. This move is seen as a blatant disregard for due process, undermining democratic governance and the rule of law.
Meranda’s emergence as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is seen as a historic milestone, presenting an opportunity for Lagos State to set a precedent of excellence and inclusivity in governance.
