JUST IN: US Sends Troops to Nigeria

    Published on

The United States has deployed a small team of troops to Nigeria, according to the general in charge of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

AFRICOM confirmed that the deployment is limited in size and scope and is focused on security cooperation, training, and advisory support. The troops are not expected to take part in direct combat operations.

US officials said the move is part of ongoing military collaboration between both countries, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to address security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, and regional instability.

The command stressed that the deployment was carried out at the request and with the consent of the Nigerian government, and that it aligns with existing bilateral defence agreements.

Nigeria and the United States have maintained long-standing military ties, particularly in intelligence sharing, counterterrorism training, and logistical support. AFRICOM added that the presence of US personnel would be reviewed regularly and adjusted based on evolving security needs.

Further details on the duration and specific locations of the deployment were not disclosed.
