Heavy rainfall recorded in Gantsa Town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State has destroyed over 100 houses.
It was gathered that the torrential downpour, which began in the late hours of Sunday evening to Monday morning also left many families homeless and caused significant damage to property.
The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani who confirmed this in a statement made available to newsmen, said floods resultant of the heavy downpour quickly inundated residential areas of Gantsa town, leading to the collapsed of several houses.
According to ASC Tijjani, “Preliminary reports indicate that the severe weather conditions led to widespread flooding, which overwhelmed the town’s drainage systems. Many families were forced to flee their homes in search of safety, and countless personal belongings have been lost to the floodwaters.
“Local authorities, security agencies including the Buji Local Government Emergency Response Team and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were on ground to assess the extent of the damage. Rescue operations are ongoing, and temporary shelters are being set up to accommodate the displaced residents at the Local Government quarters.
“NSCDC Disaster Management personnel were deployed strategically to guard victim’s property against theft and pilferages while at the same time assisting with the evacuation. There have been no reported casualties at this time, but the situation remained fluid as more information is being gathered.

“The NSCDC Jigawa State Commandant, Muhammad Danjuma expressed his deep concern over the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this disaster who have lost their homes and properties”, he said.
“As the town begins to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event, the State Commandant is calling on all citizens to remain vigilant and take precautions as the rainy season continues. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and heed warnings from authorities to avoid further tragedies,” the NSCDC PRO, ASC Tijjani however stated.
