Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has signed Executive Order Number 2 of 2024, increasing the retirement age of academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions to 65 years.

This decision applies to Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic Zaria, College of Education Gidan Waya, and School of Nursing and Midwifery, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

According to Commissioner of Education Prof Muhammad Sani Bello, the decision followed a meeting between the Governor and the management and leadership of Academic Unions of state-owned tertiary institutions.

The academics had presented five demands, and the Governor pledged to fulfill some over time, specifically resolving the retirement age issue within 48 hours.

Governor Uba Sani fulfilled this promise by signing the Executive Order, which came into effect on Thursday. The Kaduna State Government is committed to ensuring smooth implementation across state-owned tertiary institutions.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included outstanding salaries and welfare benefits, funding for institutions, and the tenure of academic staff.

The Governor agreed to consider outstanding payments, commence revenue sharing with institutions, and adopt the national policy of 65 years as the retirement age.

This development brings Kaduna State in line with national policies and addresses the concerns of academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions.
