Minna – Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago of Niger State has arrived the country after his Hajj rites in Saudi Arabia.

The Governor who is the first Nigerian Hujjaj to return to the country as a result of the Mokwa flood that claimed the lives of over 120 lives and rendered many homeless called on people of the state residing in riverine areas in the state to flee from the areas immediately to avoid another loss of life and property reminiscent to that of Mokwa.

The Governor who arrived the country from Saudi Arabia on Sunday visited the flood ravaged town Monday and declared that the country and indeed Niger state cannot afford to witness such a disaster that ended in a colossal loss of lives and properties.

He donated the sum of N1b to victims of the disaster, directing the state Ministry of Lands to donate vast land and the necessary Certificate of Occupancy, to the Federal government for its proposed settlement project for the victims.

Bago who visited various spots destroyed by the flood promised that government will embark on the immediate and proper resettlement of all those affected directly and indirectly.

“We will embark on the construction of permanent drainages and bridges in Mokwa town to curtail future occurrence of such disaster.
“All the cash and other materials donated by the federal government, spirited individuals as well as other donor agencies would be utilized for the purpose it was meant for.

The Governor thanked all those that have supported the affected victims in one way or the other just as he called on other Nigerians to support them.

He called on Islamic teachers in the area to always ensure that they document all the pupils under their care for proper accountability during such disasters in future.
Many of the Almajiris students were among many who were trapped in their settlement areas and swept off and are yet to be accounted for till now.
