Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has awarded fully funded Master’s degree scholarships to 44 first-class graduates of the Benue State University (BSU) during the institution’s 22nd, 23rd, and 24th combined convocation ceremony held recently in Makurdi.
The ceremony saw a total of 17,925 graduands conferred with various degrees, comprising 15,101 Bachelor’s degrees, 72 Postgraduate Diplomas, 2,196 Master’s degrees, and 556 PhD degrees.
While congratulating the graduands, Governor Alia directed the university management to ensure that convocations are held annually. He commended the management, staff, and students for their commitment to academics and research, reaffirming his government’s dedication to education development and funding.

The governor announced plans to establish a campus in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, and donate 500 computers to the university’s ICT Centre. He also intends to establish a satellite campus in the Benue South District.
Chancellor Najib Adamu pledged support for the university’s mission, emphasizing partnerships, technology, and innovation. Pro-Chancellor Sir Paul Chukwuma highlighted the institution’s strides in academic excellence, infrastructure development, and research.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Joe Iorapuu praised Governor Alia for stabilizing the university through timely salary payments, announcing that outstanding allowances would be paid next week. He noted the university’s progress, including 30 accredited programs with a 99.9% success rate.
BSU has made significant strides in research and innovation, with staff developing innovative solutions such as hybrid maize threshers and groundnut shellers. The university has also secured funding through TETFund for research grants.
