Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and security operatives have foiled an attempted takeover of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office by alleged security men.
The men in police uniform attempted to break in and steal valuables before the governor and security operatives arrived.
According to reports, the police operatives, led by a top officer from the state command, arrived at 1:00 a.m. to block the electoral office and prevent RSIEC officials from accessing the facility.
Their goal was to stop the proposed Local Government Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday.
The would-be thieves attempted to scale the gates and strong room to steal sensitive electoral materials. However, vigilant security officials alerted the commission’s principal officers and government authorities, who quickly informed the governor.
Governor Fubara swiftly responded by leading a team of government officials, lawmakers, and stakeholders to the facility.
The governor’s loyalists, including Chief of Staff Edison Ehie, Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, and State and National Assembly members, have since taken over the facility.”
