The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the increasing water levels of River Niger and River Benue, urging citizens to take immediate precautions to avoid flooding.
According to NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, “The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has affirmed that there is a continuous increase in the Water Level between Thursday 19th -Tuesday 24th September, 2024, along the River Niger.”
Mohammed emphasized the importance of citizens heeding the warning, stating, “The citizens and communities along the River Niger, should keep away from flood plains and clear their water ways.”

NIHSA also alerted the public to rising water levels in River Benue, which have reached alarming heights, indicating a heightened risk of flooding in states along the river ¹. The agency advised Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to help mitigate potential floods.
