The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts across the country with the launch of the 2024 Hazard Risk Countrywide Analysis.
Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the need for collaboration among stakeholders to address Nigeria’s vulnerabilities to disasters and climate change, building a safer and more resilient nation.
The report, developed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with technical support from UNICEF, provides a detailed analysis of Nigeria’s vulnerability to hazards such as floods, droughts, and public health emergencies.
It offers critical data to improve early warning systems and enhance risk mitigation strategies, empowering policymakers, emergency responders, and community leaders to make informed decisions.

VP Shettima highlighted the importance of understanding the magnitude of challenges facing Nigeria, enabling the government to shift from reactive to proactive strategies in addressing disasters.
He noted recent devastating floods and disease outbreaks, which have displaced thousands and claimed lives, emphasizing the urgency of robust preparedness mechanisms.
The Vice President commended NEMA, development partners, and stakeholders for their dedication to producing the report, describing it as a landmark achievement reflecting the administration’s focus on proactive governance.
He expressed gratitude to international partners, including UN agencies and NGOs, for their contributions to disaster preparedness and response initiatives.
The launch was attended by key stakeholders, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Sen. Kaka Shehu Lawan.
Both lawmakers pledged legislative support for measures to impact crisis management and disaster mitigation.
The Director General of NEMA, Dr. Zubaida Umar, said the launch marked a milestone in stakeholders’ collective efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and response.
She emphasized that preparedness is the cornerstone of disaster management and a shared responsibility to ensure that all actors respond swiftly and efficiently to emergencies.
