After five long years behind bars, former Nigerian lawmaker Farouk Lawan has returned home to a heroic welcome. His constituents in Bagwai and Shanono Federal Constituency flocked to greet him, eager to catch a glimpse of the man who had once represented them with such passion and dedication.

Lawan’s journey to this moment has been marked by trials and tribulations. The former chairman of the House of Representatives probe panel on the oil subsidy regime was sentenced to seven years in prison for receiving a bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola ¹.

Despite this setback, Lawan remained steadfast, accepting his incarceration with faith and humility.

“I accepted my incarceration in good faith as it was a trial destined by God,” Lawan said, his words dripping with sincerity. His visit, he emphasized, was not about politics, but about reconnecting with his people, offering condolences, and paying homage to traditional leaders.

As he stepped out of his house on Jigawa Road, clad in traditional Kwankwasiyya attire, Lawan reiterated his commitment to freelancing in politics, unbound by partisan ties. The crowd roared in approval, a testament to his enduring influence.

District Head Nura Shehu Ahmad hailed Lawan’s incarceration as “a blessing in disguise,” noting how it had transformed former enemies into loyal supporters. “You connected with us even from prison, supporting the needy and sending messages.

    We cherish you,” Ahmad said.
Similar accolades poured in from Ibrahim Sani Gaya Uban Doman Kano, District Head of Shanono Local Government, who praised Lawan’s respect for all individuals regardless of position. Saidu Sarkin Ya, a chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), appealed to the Federal Government to grant Lawan clemency, recognizing his unwavering impact.

Lawan’s homecoming was a celebration of redemption, resilience, and the power of community. As he walked among his people, it was clear that his conviction had only strengthened his bond with them. His story serves as a poignant reminder that even in the darkest moments, hope and forgiveness can prevail.
