Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has called on political leaders to find a lasting solution to Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, stressing that distributing food items only provides temporary relief.
Lawan emphasized that many Nigerians are in a desperate situation, and while interventions like food distribution can offer some solace, they do not address the underlying issues.
Lawan also raised concerns about the high interest rate of 34% for borrowing, which he believes stifles business investments and food production.

He noted that this rate makes it difficult for local businesses and farmers to compete with their counterparts in other countries that offer much lower interest rates.
The former Senate President urged the federal government to intervene and make funds for investment more accessible.
He expressed hope that the economic reforms introduced by the President Tinubu administration would yield positive results in 2025.
Lawan’s comments came after he flagged off the distribution of grains and food materials to vulnerable individuals in his Senatorial District of Yobe North.
He emphasized the importance of state governments complementing the federal government’s efforts in delivering good governance.
The Senator also highlighted the plight of Nigerian farmers in northwestern states, who have lost their livelihoods due to insecurity.
He called on leaders to support farmers in returning to their farms and providing them with the necessary inputs to achieve optimal yields.
In summary, Lawan’s message to leaders is clear: while temporary interventions like food distribution are necessary, they must also address the root causes of hunger and economic insecurity in Nigeria.
