Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has vehemently criticized the recent Edo State polls, describing them as a “blatant example of state capture” rather than a genuine democratic process.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, expressed his concerns on his social media handle, emphasizing the dire consequences of a flawed leadership recruitment process.

Obi stated, “What happened over the weekend in the name of an election in Edo State does not represent the democratic process we chose for electing our political leadership. Instead, it was a blatant example of state capture and continued gross undermining of our democratic process and values.”

He further emphasized that any nation with a fatally flawed leadership recruitment process is doomed, and Nigeria is already witnessing the effects. Obi urged those in authority to address the situation and not rely on it to maintain power.

He stressed the importance of allowing technologies like IReV and BVAS to function properly to free the electoral process from massive falsification. Obi warned those undermining democracy that their actions will have consequences, stating, “The society you are helping to destroy today will eventually take her revenge on you tomorrow.”

Obi also addressed lecturers and others complicit in perpetuating the charade, urging them to reflect on their roles in damaging democracy. He emphasized that today’s politics should focus on saving the country and making it work for everyone, regardless of background. Obi remains committed to building a new and truly democratic Nigeria.
