ABUJA — The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), has reiterated the National Assembly’s dedication to legislative oversight, emphasizing its crucial role in democratic governance.
Speaking at the University of Ibadan during the 7th annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi roundtable and the 75th posthumous birthday of the late former governor of Oyo State, Jibrin highlighted the importance of oversight in ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective use of public funds.
Jibrin, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, stated that the legislature acts as the government’s watchdog, holding the executive branch accountable and safeguarding the interests of the people.

He noted that through oversight functions, the legislature has the power to investigate government activities, evaluate policies, and monitor the implementation of programs and activities for which funds have been appropriated.
“The role of legislative oversight in a democratic society cannot be overemphasized because it is the bedrock of democratic governance,” Jibrin said. “It ensures accountability, transparency, and the much-needed checks and balances which enhance the effective use of public funds.”
The roundtable, organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, focused on the topic “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects.” Jibrin commended the SAAF for maintaining the legacy and principles of the late Oyo Governor through the annual event.
Addressing questions from discussants, Jibrin explained the rationale behind naming the National Assembly Library after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that Tinubu’s history as a former senator and his wife’s senatorial role warranted the honor.
On the issue of refineries, Jibrin mentioned that the National Assembly had set up several committees to oversee them and ensure that appropriated funds were spent effectively. He confirmed that the Port Harcourt Refinery had started operations, with the Warri Refinery soon to follow. He also expressed pride in the Dangote Refinery project, highlighting its significance for Nigeria.
Regarding power supply challenges, Jibrin described the issue as a work in progress, with the present government designing ways to address the problem and stimulate the country’s economy. He acknowledged the efforts of previous governments and emphasized the current administration’s commitment to ensuring an adequate power supply.
In conclusion, Jibrin assured Nigerians that the 10th Assembly is committed to performing its duties and invited constructive critique of their activities to enhance governance and accountability.
