The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in Abuja. The arrest occurred on Tuesday, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that Bello had voluntarily surrendered himself.
According to EFCC officials, Bello was apprehended by the agency’s Chief Security Officer at exactly 12:54 PM. A source within the commission revealed that Bello is currently in custody, undergoing interrogation at the Commission’s headquarters.
The EFCC has debunked claims that Bello voluntarily surrendered himself. “Former Governor Yahaya Bello was arrested by the Chief Security Officer of the EFCC in Abuja at 12:54 PM on Tuesday. Contrary to some media reports, he did not present himself voluntarily,” a source stated.

EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details. The arrest marks a significant escalation in Bello’s legal troubles with the EFCC, which has accused him of diverting N101.4 billion in public funds and laundering N80.2 billion alongside his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu.
Bello faces a 16-count charge related to these allegations. In October 2024, Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court issued a public summons requiring Bello to appear for arraignment. Despite the court’s directive and a ruling from the Court of Appeal, Bello has yet to comply.
The EFCC has sought adjournments to provide Bello additional time to respond to the summons. His arraignment is now set for Wednesday, November 27, 2024, marking the next step in a high-profile case that has drawn significant public attention.
