Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing concerns over the party’s current direction.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of his ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku expressed his disappointment with the party’s trajectory, which he believes has strayed from its foundational principles.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter states. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

The former vice president, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition coalition, emphasized the emotional toll of his decision, describing it as heartbreaking. “As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote. Despite his departure, Atiku wished the PDP and its leadership well for the future.

Atiku’s resignation marks a notable shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, with the former vice president continuing to play a key role within the opposition coalition. His decision has sparked discussions among political analysts and party members alike about the future direction of the PDP and the implications for national politics.
