Armed robbers attack travellers on Ife-Akure highway, rape female victim

AGroup of eight daredevil armed robbers attacked travellers on the Ife-Akure expressway, raping a female victim and shooting the driver of a commercial bus.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the robbers stopped two vehicles, a bus and a car, traveling from Lagos to Ilesa near Osu.

The robbers made off with valuables, including ATM cards, and forced victims to transfer funds into their accounts.

A victim, Wale, recounted the ordeal, stating that the driver was shot but not killed, and a female passenger was raped.

Wale and a few others escaped into the bush and alerted security operatives, who quickly responded and arrested one of the robbers.

The Osun command police spokesperson, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, confirmed the incident and stated that the arrested suspect is in custody and assisting with investigations. The injured victims are receiving treatment at a hospital in Ile-Ife.

The swift response of security operatives, including policemen, vigilantes, and members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, led to the arrest of one of the robbers.

The incident highlights the need for increased security measures on highways to protect travellers from such attacks.
